This grate captures most of the coals in the grate which yields nice even heat with no poking of the logs. A big improvement over a traditional grate.

I must say that we were a little apprehensive about buying this grate, but after reading the review that it helps keep the smoke out of the house, we had to try it. It is really the best grate. The first time we used it no smoke, we used it all day yesterday and the house NEVER got smokey! If I could give this grate 10 stars I would. Don't hesitate to buy this item.

The vestal self-feeding grate is the best we have ever owned. The slats are appropriately spaced to allow through burning of the logs.

This is an extremely good grate but not really suited to gas fireplaces. If you've got an old-fashioned fireplace without a gas starter, this will keep your logs contained and build the coals so, once going, the fire will feed itself without you having to constantly adjust it. The bottom center, however, because it is low, won't sit over the gas starter. I got this originally for my house (with a gas starter) but moved it to my cabin (without gas starter). I highly recommend it for the non-gas fireplaces.
