I purchased this wood stove/insert over a year ago, and absolutely love it. Once a bed of coals is established I can cut back the intake air for a nice long burn. Sometimes I can go to bed with a fire going, and return from work the next day to find that there are still hot coals in the firebox.
This unit replaced a Vermont castings insert, and uses roughly half the fuel. We used the heatilator firebox for a couple of years, and if you've ever used one of those you know they don't throw off much heat at all. This thing blows the heatilator out of the water.
I have a drafty 1400 sq ft home, and this unit can easily keep the place warm in single digit temperatures. In fact with the air intake lever fully open it is too hot for our small home! This unit could easily heat a larger home if the unit is on the ground floor.
The fan that it comes with is very silent on 'low', and, in my opinion, fairly quiet even when on 'hi'. I can only hear air moving when the fan is on.
The door is very large and the stove will accept huge pieces of wood. The glass on the door stays very clean. I even use the 'cooktop' to boil water for boiled eggs and noodles sometimes.
The only downfall I can find is the lack of an ashpan. My VC stove had one....but....I use this unit daily in the colder months as my main source of heat, and I only shovel ashes out once every 10-15 days. No big deal there! It burns the wood so efficiently that there is very little ash left over. I like to call it a "Wood Reactor".
I re-lined my own chimney, and installed the unit myself in an afternoon.
Buy it, you'll like it!
