Bought this to stop any heat loss up my chimney when the fireplace was not in use. It is very straightforward to use, although the topography of your chimney matters, so take a look at their website first to figure out where you would put your balloon and therefore what size you should get. (I could not fit the balloon in my basement fireplace because the chain that closes the flue was at an angle such that it was impossible to place a pillow there.) Blow it up a third of the way and then push it in place, then fill it up and close the valve. I leave the extended blow tube on and dangling down; it is unobtrusive with the fireplace glass doors closed, but unmistakable when they are opened. You don't want to build a fire with your chimney balloon in place. Easy removed by turning the valve and releasing the air.
I could tell that it was working because the glass doors on my fireplace -usually ice cold in cold weather -are now room temperature.
A completely unexpected benefit was evident when I heard skittering sounds of something dancing on top of my chimney balloon and unable to get below it into the fireplace. I suspect it was a mouse.
