The bar is based on a 1/2" inch pipe. Because the powder coating cakes off pretty fast, you WILL have to take the bar off to get all the debris out of the pipe or many of the holes won't have any flame. A larger diameter pipe isn't immune to this, but it takes a lot more build-up to actually choke the gas flow. Because the mixing chamber is so long, and the holes in the pipe don't start right away, the actually flame start is about 6" from the end of the bar near the mixing chamber. This is a very long distance. I drilled more holes in mine so that the flame started closer to the mixing head.
My last starter log was based on a 3/4" pipe and worked much better. Next time I need a starter log, I'm just going to buy some pipe and drill the holes myself. While this wasn't expensive, having to put a hour of work into it to make it what I needed was a pain. Might as well take a little more time and make the whole thing.
