This thing ended up being even bigger and heavier than I imagined. We immediately noticed a difference in the heat that the fireplace threw off. Unfortunately it does get discolored from the heat and ash but I don't think it's possible to avoid that.

The product as shipped was fine. The problem is that the first fire I had in my fireplace after installation of the fire back produced a crack in it starting at the upper left hand corner and ending at the center. My dad loves US history and I was so pleased to find this fire back representing Hopewell Furnace. Perfect for a history buff like him. Their fireplace is fairly big and the heat from the room seems to get sucked up the chimney.
