I always like to have a bag of Fatwood on hand during the fireplace season. Fatwood is great for getting a fire started because it ignites quickly via match or lighter. Four or five of these lit in a fireplace burn long enough and hot enough to get the kindling burning and get a big, hot fire off to a good start.
A couple pieces of Fatwood are also great to get a dying fire back to life again. Also one lit piece of Fatwood held up to the open damper gets the air flow going.
