Before I bought this plug I thought it was kind of strange that other people either loved it or said it didn't work. I see now why that is. If you have a fireplace that has a damper handle sticking down into the fireplace below the damper (like mine) you do not want this plug because it wont work. The handle will get in the way. Fortunately, i bought it from Home depot so i was able to return it.
The package says "can be used in any fireplace" but it is not possible for it to seal if you have a damper handle in the way. I am going to try the different type of chimney balloon that goes in above the damper, or I might just stuff the damper with fiberglass.

I have a zero-clearance firebox so I bought the small pillow as recommended on the maker's website. They say that it "fits any metal or zero-clearance fireplace with a round damper" but it sure doesn't fit my fireplace.Their installation picture shows it going below the round part of the chimney pipe, but it doesn't seal at the corners since that part of the fireplace isn't round (at least mine isn't). I tried shoving it up into the damper itself but the handle isn't long enough to prop anywhere and then I couldn't reach it to inflate it anyway.
It's better than nothing, but overall it was a disappointing purchase. I bought it elsewhere and can't return it, either (although since you inflate it manually by blowing into it, I'm glad they don't take returns I really don't want a used one!).
Update: While the balloon doesn't fit very well and was a hassle to put in, it definitely is making a difference. Overnight lows have been near freezing but my living room is a lot warmer than it would have been without it. It's still a little drafty, but it's just a draft and not wind funneling down the chimney like it was pre-Draftstopper.

my fireplace damper got jammed open, and replacement parts were not available. This makes for a good seal, and is easy to install/remove for using the fireplace. One thing to note is to make VERY sure that the fireplace is cooled sufficiently. I didn't wait long enough one night, and the stick melted down a bit (it still is long enough for my application, luckily)
The seller shipped it VERY fast and was very easy to deal with!
Honest reviews on Fireplace Chimney Draftstopper Plug Balloon (Small Pillow) - Fits
I was skeptical when I ordered this item but I'm glad I did. The room use to get cooler the closer you got to the fireplace; the temperature was 5 8 degrees cooler than any other room in the house. Now, the room temperature is consistent and barely 2 3 degrees cooler than any other room (vaulted ceiling, 15 ft on the high end & 8 ft on the low end, with 2 vents on the lower end near the fireplace).I thought I chose the wrong item because my fireplace is shallow and the dampener is recessed. It took a couple of days to figure out how to make it work in my fireplace. The balloon cannot be position properly when fully inflated. So I positioned it so one of the bulges inflates up into the recessed dampener. Since then, it's worked like a charm! The glass doors are no longer ice cold and I don't feel a draft (even when it's really windy outside) blowing out of the fireplace.
I've recommended this product to friends who have draft problems with their fireplace.
