Used as directed, Rutland 63 Fireplace Mortar works great as an adhesive and filler, and as I noted in the title, it is cheap. I looked on line at products in the $100 range, and although I have no idea as to whether or not they would have done a better job, the Rutland product does the job, so why pay 20 times as much?

Rutland warns about filling over 1/4" thick, recommending their casting materials for that use, and I believe I discovered why. When you fire the repair, entraped water turns to steam and causes bubbles in the material. For my purposes this was not a point of concern, but if appearance is important in your repair, pay attention to their warning. Go on line and download Rutland's instruction and information sheets.

Just a point of interest, my repair was to an over 40 year old Kamado, an earthenware Japanese cooker which must have served as a model for the Weber BBQs. Moves of our household over those 40 years cracked the firebox and firering. I have used the Kamado several times since the repair, and all appears to be in good shape.

Used this to patch some cracks in my fireplace and level some holes where the grate sits , Great product .

This fireplace mortar is fabulous. Easy to use and really adheres the firebrick to the firewall. I replaced 6 firebricks and used this product to hold the bricks in place and fill in the joints. A good product to have on hand if you have a fireplace.

I used this on my 24 year old masonry heatilator fireplace firebrick floor and this product helped me make it look like new again. The application was easily and the fire-in-place curing worked well.
