I have been a chimney sweep for 30 years and use Rutland regularly. I find it to be the best product for this purpose I have ever found. The only drawback is it tends to break down after a few years and needs to be replaced.

I bought this from Amazon because it is very hard to find this product in grey in my local big box hardware stores. Most stores seem to carry it in black color, but I wanted something that would match my existing grey mortar. This product matched it well, and it was very easy to apply. Very happy overall.

Had a handfull of cracks in the refractory brick liner in our Superior prefab fireplace and was looking for an option to keep me from either ordering new bricks or from casting my own. I cleaned the fireplace out really well with the shopvac and then used an old toothbrush with water and thoroughly cleaned all of the cracks. The largest crack I had was probably a 1/16 of an inch and the smallest were hairline cracks. This actually worked better on the larger cracks as it was able to get into the crevice and fill the void. On the hairline cracks I appied a small bead and then smoothed it with my finger and it is starting to flake off of those spots. On the larger cracks it seems to be holding perfectly. I followed the curing directions to the letter.

When I had found damage inside my fireplace on the bottom I wasn't sure where I would find a mortar to fix it. I looked at my local big stores and was disappointed they weren't carrying it anymore! So I started looking online as I usually end up doing. Amazon.com came to my rescue and had the Rutland fireplace mortar in a tube. Following the directions it was easy to use and it hardened up in a short time. The price was fantastic and I received it in a matter of days. Now my fireplace is fixed and ready to go for the winter when I want to burn some logs.
