Each candle tray has a spike sticking up to hold a wax candle -I cut them off using a tool from my husband's tool box so I could place my flameless candles on there. A bit of the finish came off but that's hidden under the candles.

At first I thought this would be too flimsy. Once I got the candles on it, it seemed very stable and the simple design works well. It turned the black hole of our fireplace into a brighter focal point even when the candles aren't burning.
