I ordered this heavy (33 pounds) little jewel from Amazon a week ago, got it much earlier than expected and tried it out the day I got it. I now have 4 grills: An "oil barrel" type that is perfect for when the family tribe shows up, 2 Weber kettle types in different sizes for weekend entertaining and now the Lodge.

I've had several cast aluminum discount store hibachi's over the years and after the wooden handles fall off, the legs become impossible to tighten and then the "adjustable" supports for the grill crack. I don't see that happening with this hibachi.

Let the grill pre-heat, spray it with PAM and then enjoy the meal. The heat is even, cooking times may be a bit faster than you think, but the dish will be excellent.

HOWEVER! If one is cooking on a wooden deck, as I do, invest in some bricks or concrete pavers to go under the feet. Like all cast iron, this sucker retains heat and you don't want to burn your house down while entertaining guests.

Look for the book "The Honerable Hibachi" by Kathryn Popper. An excellent guide/recipe book.

I wonder if this would be safe to use in a large fireplace in winter months. Any ideas?

I'm thinking about getting another Lodge and then finding a home for the smaller Weber.

Get one and then enjoy your hibachi.

Update Feb 26, 2006:

I've now had the Lodge Hibachi for 4 months and typically use it several times a week. Clean-up is even easier than it was when new. Remember to put a little olive oil or PAM on the grids first and the seasoning improves. In cold, rainy weather, the hibachi fits and cooks nicely in my fireplace (thanks, Ukiechris!), but I crack a window when I do that.

Although quite heavy, it's a great picnic grill and will easily cook chicken, steaks or burgers for 4 people. My Webers must think I don't love them anymore. I do, but the Lodge is perfect for 1-4 people and chicken cooked on the hibachi has a flavor my kettle or barrel grills just can't match.

Besides cooking for that tribal gathering, I'll let you know if I find something the Lodge can't do.

A great little grill! Though I grew up with weber, kettle type grills, and even tried a trash-picked gas grill, I have never used a grill that cooks so consistently well.

I use mine with hardwood charcoal -this gets the temperature hot, fast. As soon as the charcoal is lit up I spread the coals outward, drop the grill on top (on the high side of the legs), and let it warm up for a couple minutes. Once the cast iron is warmed up the heat radiates evenly across the cooking surface. To check the temp, I hold my hand 4 inches over the top of the grill -if I can hold it there for more than a couple seconds, it is not hot enough. Without adding charcoal, I usually have just enough time to do two batches on the grill.

For steak, I leave the meat on for four minutes each side. When I pull it off, it has a nice crispy crust, and a perfect pink inside. When I cook burgers, I leave them on five minutes each side. And, chicken, I'll take a boneless, skinless chicken breast and pound it flat with a fry pan before tossing it onto the grill (this prevents the common problem of dry on the thin end and too pink on the thick end). Four minutes each side, and when the milky juice flows out when pricked with a fork, you know that it is perfect and juicy. I cook fish in a similar fashion. A little flavor tip: Some coarse kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper added to your meat before cooking is usually all you need to have excellent results.

Now, for roasting or smoking, this is not the product for you. Since there is not a lid it would be impossible to cook a whole chicken, for instance. Buy a weber for that. But a weber will never acheive the kind of perfect steaks and burgers that you get from one of these.

We have had our grill for three years now. It has lived outide our home the entire time in all kinds of weather rain, snow, ice, or sun. And I was grilling in all conditions. I have performed absolutely no maintenance -never oiled it, never cleaned the ashes. It seams perfectly happy in this state of useful neglect.

If you want a great charcoal grill, this is what you want.

One of my friends received this as a gift to use for tailgating parties. After a few uses, he decided it took to long to cool off, was to hard to clean and had put it back in the box with the intention of setting it out with the trash! Fortunately before he did, he saw me looking at it on this website and asked if I planned on buying it. I said yes and he said don't because he had one that he was going to throw away. If I didn't mind it being used and a little rusty, I could have his. I took it. It was rusted but I scrubbed it, oiled all the parts, and seasoned it in the oven (it was still cold outside so I couldn't fire it up)!

This little grill came in so handy when we bought another house in the spring and removed the stove to make way for the new one. I cooked on it everyday. What my friend found as a disadvantage, I found as an advantage, it stays hot for a long time!

I grilled everything, half smokes, kabobs, burgers, chicken, veggies, fish, etc. . . and nothing stuck! I also grilled ribs on it. I sliced them into individual ribs, placed them on the grill, and covered them with foil (crimped the foil around the rack with tongs). They turned out really good. I used my little cast iron skillet on top of the rack to scramble eggs, and blacken steaks (lots of coals needed for that).

The grill is very durable and as long as it is properly taken care of will provide many years of grilling pleasure! I really like it because the grill rack can be put in the sink for easy clean up and as long as it's properly seasoned, I don't have to worry about my food sticking to it.

I also have a 22" weber kettle grill that I use when I want to grill a lot of food or large items. If I don't, I set this one inside of it on the grate and use it instead. This is an excellent grill for a small household, and I recommend it over the other hibachi type grills. It's great for camping but keep in mind that since it's cast iron it takes a long time to cool down, so start grillin' early!

I love using the Sportman's Grill. It gets hot fast and temperature control is easy with the damper and two-position grate. I keep mine seasoned with pam and keep the water out by covering it with an old cookie sheet while it cools down.

This grill is definitely for hardcore charcoal users. I can see where less experienced grillers might not be able to get good results. If you need a thermometer to cook a steak, this is not your grill. If you cam measure temperature by how long you can hold your bare hand over the coals, this grill is for you.

I only gave it four stars because I don't find it very easy to clean out. All of the loose parts have to be removed (grill, charcoal grate, damper door, and the front door) to get all the ash out. Also, I find the carrying handle is nearly useless. The grill is unbalanced so that if you try to pick it up with all of the aformentioned parts attached, it tips over and all the parts end up on the ground. Be careful.

Pros:

1) Beautiful sear marks and flavour

2) Preseasoned, so it's easy care, just wipe down with an oily paper towel, and remember to cleanup the ash after use.

3) Simple effective no-frills design.

4) Can be used as an outdoor firepit.

5) Sturdily built.

6) The oval shape is much more space-efficient than the round one:

a) for finding somewhere to put it,

b) the cooking surface you can fit 6 burger patties on this, flank steak, a full rack of ribs, good sized slab of salmon...(not all at once!) plus two or three medium potatoes wrapped in foil next to the coals. You can cook for 2-6 pple.

c) in arranging the coals for the right type of heat for what you want to cook.

Cons:

1) No lid -For a lid, I would suggest the Cajun Classic brand cast-iron oval dutchoven flipped upside down.

2) Matching oval-shaped Lodge cast-iron Dutch oven is discontinued (could be used as lid, griddle and dutch oven).

3) It is heavy

4) It is ugly

5) Design too basic? Could be made more user friendly with height-adjust option during cooking. Currently, you have to flip the grill over to change height.

You have to really know your coals. Not very charcoal-phob friendly.

6) Limited use:

a) Cast Iron retains heat and cools slowly, so not very pratical for anything where you might have to move it before it cools.

b) Needs to be baby-ed: water + ash = lye, which will eat away at the cast iron bottom causing rust. So no open grilling in a snowstorm, during unstable weather, or leaving out overnight to cool. You have to go back out when it cools to put it under some sort of cover.

Needful accessories:

1) Oval dutch oven to be flipped upside down and used as a lid.

2) Chimney starter.

3) dutch oven lifter which can we used to lift the grill grate and adjust the height while grate is still hot.

4) alternately a pair of heat resistant gloves.

5) 2 pairs of heat resistant tongs, one for fiddling with the coals/ash and another for cooking with.

6) The nylon cover to help protect it from weather (better than nothing, but a garage or shed is best).

Conclusion:

Love it for its efficient size and shape, great sear marks and flavour. Hate it for when the sky threatens to snow/rain.

Precaution for those who live on the shore:

I live by the shore and have salt water mist roll in overnight. I MUST move it into the shed, as moisture/mist/condensation will collect even under the protective covering. Also, a well oiled and cleaned grate will rust in the salt mist if left out overnight.

These really are some great matches. There isn't a whole lot to say about matches that really needs to be said. Do they light easily? Yes. Do they stay lit? Yes. They do all the basics really well but what makes them nice is the other stuff that doesn't usually get mentioned.

First, the box art has gotten me some compliments. I'm a cigar and pipe smoker and every time I pull these out someone compliments the art and the unique style. I'm also a dog trainer and former military dog handler, so the dog art on the box is really cool.

Second, they have a really nice aroma to their burn. Does this make a huge difference? Not too much, you won't improve the smell of your home with them. It does make a difference if you light a pipe or cigar with them and your sense of taste is sensitive enough to pick it up. It added a very pleasant taste to some of my pipe tobacco. I had a few people actually comment on the pleasant smell of the match itself. Never heard that about any other matches or lighters I have ever used.

Third, burn time. The length of time that they stay lit is perfect for cigars and pipes. They aren't too long that it makes you look like you have a burning chopstick in your hands and they aren't short enough that you'll burn your fingers while you focus on other things. I can get a few lights on my pipe easily. It also burns perfectly for a cigar. I can light the match, toast the foot of the cigar, then light it and smoke it with one match.

These factors made my purchase well worth it. I don't use these matches all the time, I still have butane lighters and simple kitchen matches, but I really like bringing them out with me if I'll be in a more public place. The box art and the burn time makes it nice to have. They are a reliable match that I can count on to light whatever I need to. I also like having the box around to set things on/against or write quick notes on. My wife and I have a lot of candles around the house as well as incense so we can actually use one match to light all that we want. I see these matches as a quality single use match versus the kitchen matches that takes multiple matches to light numerous candles or get a pipe/cigar going. I'd rather bring this nice box of matches and only need a single match than to try to bring a ton of cheap kitchen matches that are hit and miss.

There's more positives to these matches: I got them soaking wet and they still worked after letting them thoroughly dry. I wouldn't necessarily call them survival matches, but it isn't game over if they get wet. The box is also very useful for storage after you've run through the matches. I use one of my boxes as storage for pencil leads, x-acto blades, erasers, and sharpeners. I also use a second one to keep short USB and cell phone charger cables in, works perfectly

Something you may also not know from the product description is that you're getting 50 matches in this box. Each match is about 4 inches long. I haven't tried to strike these on any surface other than the strike plate, but they strike off of any similar striking surface. I had one match out but I put the box back so I grabbed a small matchbook and used the striking surface on that to get this match going. They light easily and quickly.

If you want cheap matches I'm sure you can find a free matchbook or get a box of cheap kitchen matches. If you want a more quality match that is unique, reliable, and nice to use then you should buy these.

I bought two of these and spent almost $700 and I am VERY DISSAPOINTED with their performance. You can't even feel the heat unless you are about a foot away from the unit. I live in California where it doesn't really get that cold in the winter but I was interested in saving money on my heating bill and this thing won't even heat my bedroom. The mantle is oak plywood, not solid oak as advertised. The only good thing about them is that they look nice. The Amish are being used as a marketing tool to sell these fireplaces. All of the parts come from China and are assembled by Amish in Ohio, so don't expect good Amish craftsmanship because you won't get it with a Heat Surge Electric Fireplace.

I purchased this item to heat a small trailer. After reading all the hype the company provides I thought this would be a good alternative heat source. NOT SO. When I called the company to return the item you are put thru the hoops. Your on hold for hours at a time. Just trying to talk to someone to get the return shipping label issued. In the meantime the company takes their sweet time in issueing the UPS return. You have 30 days to return the item... or your stuck with it. It's shocking to me that people would pay $350 for a heater that puts out the exact same amount of heat as a $19.95 heater available at most major retail stores. If you read the specification, the heater in the HeatSurge fireplace is a 1,500 watt quartz ceramic heater.

And guess what? My local Target has a whole section full of 1,500 quartz ceramic heaters for less than...$30 each. In fact, I bought a 1,500 watt quartz ceramic heater at Target for $19.95, and it works great! The one I bought for $19.95 works so good I bought several more for my house, one for my Mom, one for my Dad, and two for my sister, all at $19.95 each! Actually, some were on sale after Christmas for $14.95 each, and others were two for $20! Nice. And warm.

The hype from Heat Surge sounds convincing but is misleading.

The heater itself is no miracle of technology. Any 1500 watt electric heater will produce the same amount of heat. It's just the fact of elctrically produced heat. The difference is how well the heat is distributed.

The heat surge has a two speed blower that forces heated air out the vents along the top of the heater. That heated air then rises to the ceiling and eventually may fill the room with heat.

I put the Heat Surge in a basement room with no door. All the heat went up the stairs and my electric bill went up $75 per month. So much for saving money!

The "Amish built" mantel looks nice, but upon close inspection your will find that the "solid wood" is plywood with a laminate or veneer covering.

The "flickering flames" are an optical illusion produced by a scrolling acetate film in front of two chandelier bulbs. The "flames" on mine frequently stop moving becuase the belt that drives the acetate film developed a flat spot.

See Consumer Reports to find musch better values on portable heaters.

For my money, I would recommend going to WalMart and buying a $25 electric heater. It won't look as nice, but you will feel just as warm, maybe warmer.

I had a bit of trouble putting mine together. Some of the connections were tight. I needed to protect two of the rods as I clamped on them to tighten them but the finish still scuffed off a bit. I also found that once I had put the top on the rod for the base that I could use that for some leverage to tighten it. Pay attention in the diagram to which length of rod goes with which tool and that the shorter screw end goes into the base. Other than that it seems fine.

With a major Cub Scout campfire coming up, I started researching how to produce colored flame. The standard searches came up with a lot of references to the subject, and in no time I had a list of the chemicals I'd need to produce the various colors. Then I started searching for the chemicals I'd need. Most were available for purchase, but were not cheap. There was really no hassle to ordering a kilogram or more of some of these chemicals, but I was amazed--and put off--by what I thought were exorbitat prices.

Then I typed "color flame" into Amazon.com and up came this stuff. Not having any experience with colored flame before, I purchased this product, along with Rainbow Flame Crystals for the Cub Scout campfire. Some modest prior experimentation in the charcoal grill at home showed that the stuff works just as advertised.

At the campfire this product produced some very nice blue, green and every so often purple flame, which both the kids and the adults found very enjoyable (hint: don't tell them that you're using this stuff, especially the kids). The effects lingered for some time, about five minutes per heaping tablespoon of product. I found that a larger amount--maybe a half cup--was the best way to apply the product to a large fire.

Also, it's better to sprinkle the product throughout the fire, rather than pour it in so it piles in a single location. Dispersing the crystals troughout the fire will create an instant and thorough color flame effect, while pouring will get you an instant effect in a single location, with a pile of crystals that becomes somewhat self-insulating. Once a log falls or you stir the coals, and that pile of crystals is disturbed you will get another burst of color, which actually is a pretty cool effect, giving you shots of color hours after you've applied the crystals.

Once that big campfire was going, I simply tossed an entire package or two directly into the fire. Using the pour or sprinkle settings on top of the package (just like your home spice containers) isn't practical for a large fire, and as described above, the effect can be quite good.

The best thing about this product is its price. Given what I'd discovered about ordering colored flame-producing chemicals, the price for this item, already prepared and ready to go, is simply outstanding. In fact, the low price had me buying more than one.

Bottom line: This is a simple product which delivers exactly as promised. I've got more scout camping and campfires coming up this summer, and this product will figure prominently in those activities.

I am generous with the shakes when placing this in a campfire. I don't use the strainer part, I use the pouring spout (heh). You might find that you can go through an entire container in just a weekend's camping. This product adds colorful greens and blues to the natural reds and golds of your campfire. Can add fun emphasis to a story being told around the fire.

These crystals are awesome. A few years ago a crafty friend showed me how to use them for camping. Collect some pinecones and pour on or paint the pinecones with wood glue. Painting is neater. Then pour the crystals over the glue painted pinecones. Set them on a plate to dry. Package them up for gift giving in clear plastic bags. These can be used in a fireplace or at a campfire. The crystals burn pretty colors and everyone will enjoy that!

Arrived with one leg broken off at the bottom. The inside box (not the box Amazon put it in) was very damaged. Pieces of the set were poking through. The box was battered and just a mess. Amazon was great with the return. I ordered another one from a different vendor. That box also was pretty battered but the piece wasn't broken. The welds are horrible, so I'm expecting this piece to rust after it sits out in the rain a time or two (bought this for an outdoor fireplace), but it's new so I can't confirm that. Other than the bad weld job, the set is quite heavy and nice to look at. We've used it once so far. It worked as it should.

I ordered this twice, and both times the grate I received was defective. The legs were uneven, which caused the grate to wobble when standing on a flat surface. When the first one came this way, I thought it was a problem with QC and returned it for a replacement. When the replacement had the exact same problem, I returned it for a refund and got one from a different manufacturer.

The grate wables. The floor in the fire place is level. The legs on the gate are almost 1/2" out of level. Dissapointed. Something else I have to fix. I could have purchased locally for same price or less and checked for levelness.

The grate arrived in two boxes and looked like it went through a war. When I opened the ripped boxes, a part of the grate had broken off and was wrapped in white paper and taped. The item description by the warehouse was" like new". I called amazon Customer Service and told them the problem. I explained that the boxes were so badly damaged that I could Not use them to return the item and suggested that I would have the broken piece welded back on locally. Customer Service issued me a $10 credit. Because I purchased the product at a discount I felt I could have it welded locally and save the outside packaging cost,[which would probably be conciderable] and Amazon the cost of returning the item and resending another one, which would be required, and still com out having saved something. Unfortunately I thought the cost of two tiny welds would cost me $ 25 at most, I was wrong.The welding cost me $50, and a lot of time finding a welder that would do the job and traveling to the welder in another town and a second trip to the welder to retrieve the item. I believe the SENDER did not bother to look inside the box the item was returned in because the inner box was obviously the one it was returnd in which had the returners lable and it was a box that was from a manufacturer of smokers with lables to the person who returned the grate. As Amazon Warehouse is a part of Amazon I believe this type of omission is not what Amazon would condone based on my fantastic experence with Amazon over the years.

Grate was well worth the money. We burn a lot of good heavy logs and this grate worked well. Good heavy duty construction.
