There is no easier, more hassle-free way to start a charcoal fire than by using one of these. As long as you have access to an electric outlet somewhere in the vicinity of your grill, you'd be foolish to use any other method.

You place the heating element on the grate, with the plastic handle resting on the barbecue's edge. Cover the element with your briquettes, plug it in, wait 12 minutes, and then remove it. By that time, any charcoals that were in contact with the red-hot element will have started. Mound up the coals, wait a few more minutes, and you're good to go. No smelly, dangerous lighter fluids, no chimneys, no newspapers. What could be more simple?

The electric cord is quite short, so if your outlet isn't close by you'll have to use an extension cord. Just make sure it is a heavy duty one like the kind used for power tools.

It's quite durable if used correctly. I bought the one I have now 6 or 7 years ago and I use it at least 30 or so times a year. The heating element is beginning to crack now, so it will fail soon, but 200+ uses for this inexpensive item is pretty respectable, I think.

I can't understand why everyone doesn't use one of these. If you like to barbecue in your backyard or on your patio or deck, this is indispensable equipment.

This starter is wonderful. But don't get lazy and leave it under the charcoal, like I did. You need to remove it after the fire starts. The plastic near the cord melts and the thing is ruined. I am ordering another one because I find I don't want to start charcoal without one.

I have a Big Green Egg. And these are recommended to start the charcoal in them.

It does the job, flat out. I have only had it a few weeks, but it does indeed start the charcoal.

Quickly too! About 5-10 mins get the coals read hot!

I gave it 5 stars because this thing does exactly what it's supposed to do, start coal.

Now, for my commentary.

This thing makes me NERVOUS AS HELL.

I have kids, and they are goofy. This is basically every toaster/counter-top oven heating element in the world, with a plastic handle. Haha

So when you take this thing out of the coals, it is this red hot heating element. Where do you put it? It has to cool off for a few mins. On the table? Patio? Where out of the way, that someone isnt going to touch it?

I am not knocking the product, it is what it is, but think about this stuff before you buy it. I wouldnt want to see someone get hurt from this thing.

this is the best charcoal starter we have ever used. the last one purchased is still working but is over ten years old and is used regularly every summer. I just purchased a new one as a back-up, but may not need it for a long time. Very reliable and very easy and safe to use.

In my area this is alot of wind(since i live close to the windy city chi) so everytime i get some kind of fire going the charcoal wont light. I tried the charcoal chimney and paid 15 bucks for it and it did nothing for me. So after trying for 2 hours to light using that dumb chimney I borrowed one of these wands from my mother and in 5 minutes the charcoal started smoking. This the best starter for a barbeque hands down.

This log rack was/is a pain. I go through about 4 cords of wood a year, and it's not holding up.

First, the slots for the wood, are tight. 2x4's are made by hundreds of mills, and have sloppy tolerances. The bracket maker should have known this, and labeled the the part as needing tight dimensions. I had to plane all the corners down, AND beat the parts together. I used 9x3 deck screws to tie the lumber together, and the ends still splay out as you load wood into the middle. But it has not broken, so that is good.

And who invented powder coat paint? It's fine till it chips off.

Just put your 2 x 4's in and start stacking wood. A strong cord could be added to top of uprights to help support a waterproof cover if desired, or place in a covered storage area. Works out great for me.

Not as exact as Seymour 30-360. Must use pressure-treated wood or is really sloppy. You MUST use screws to get a solid fit .

Once you get it together it looks and works great. The instructions are horrible and we had to cut the metal brackets that hold the fire place to the hearth. They were to big and the hearth would not sit flush around the insert otherwise. Also you need to build the hearth around the fireplace insert. There is absolutely no way to insert it and put the brackets on it after the hearth is built. So before you put the top part of the hearth on, install the fireplace part and then finsh by adding the top piece.

I'm so excited to come home to my Media electric fireplace which brings a cozy, warm and relaxed feeling to my bedroom. The dark brown espresso color adds a nice touch to my bedroom furniture which is also dark brown. After you assemble all the parts together that took almost 45 minutes, you will definitely see your moneys worth. It took almost two weeks for it to be delivered in two parts. The mantel and then the fireplace w/remote control. I panicked when I only received the mantel and didn't see the fireplace which was delivered later that day. It took the manufacturers to tell me that there are two deliveries. If there are any questions or concerns, please call the manufacturers directly. Trust me...you wont be sorry.

I love this fireplace but there are 2 manuals (one for the wooden parts and one for the fireplace itself). Given that they are separated we started with the one related to the wooden parts and we missed one step of the second manual, hence we had to disassemble or just keep going. We just kept going (we skip the step that prevents the fireplace itself from being pulled, so we hope nobody want to pull it :).

Other than that I do not have major complains but feel very warm in winter.

My fireplace size is near the upper end range of the size limit. Went in fine. Don't need to use the riser bar b/c of dimensions of fireplace opening. Looks great. Didn't need extra hardware. Helps w/ draftiness in frontroom. Door on one is a little off by 1/16-1/8" but was adjusted easily. Only thing that I was a little disappointed with was that it is listed as a fine mesh screen, but it doesn't appear to be as fine a mesh as the one's I've seen that pull closed like a curtain. I went to target near me to buy a nice 5-piece tool set and belows (It's actually pretty nice/sturdy). I would suggest this, and am satisfied with it overall. As for the dimensions listed on Amazon for the small and medium sizes of fireplace doors, they are not accurate. I went to the manufactures website to get exact sizing and they have great photos that explain the in's/out's of a fireplace.

We ordered this glass/screenenclosure for our fireplace on Monday and recieved it on Friday. I looked at the same product at Lowe's and would have taken almost 3 weeks for delivery. Amazon also charges no postage or sales tax and the item was $5.00 cheaper! As for the fireplace glass/screen enclosure I couldn't be happier. Love the dark tinted glass to hide all the ugly smoke marks when there's no fire. It is very high quality and was easy to install. I did it myself in about 45 minutes including unwrapping and reading all the instructions. I would highly recommend this product and Amazon for a pleasurable ordering experience. The fireplace doors days came in four days with the free shipping. I was concerned about the shipping but the parts were very well packed. I had no problems with the sorting of the parts before beginning the project. You need to read the instructions. There are too many parts, installation options and adjustments to make to set the door in the center of the opening. Also, read the ordering instruction carefully as there are three sizes to choose from. I first saw these at Lowes and noticed the three sizes. The display had a model that I was very impressed with. I went home to measure the opening and tried Amazon to check the price. Amazon price was a few dollars less so I order it. From box to fireplace took about an hour. The quality is excellent. The wife is happy that the old brass door set is now history.

I bought a home a while back that has a huge rock fireplace, but was too afraid of sparks and logs falling out of the open area to ever build a fire, so it went unused for almost two years. I finally decided to get a fireplace screen and door panel to put over the hole and took a chance by buying this online since there was nothing available locally. I am SO pleased with how this looks and how easy it was to install! I am a 30-something woman and I had no problems at all putting this in by myself. We are really pleased with our fireplace. It looks great in our living room. We live in a small townhouse, and the fireplace keeps the living room toasty. The heat output begins immediately to move the ceiling fan on it's own, as the heat rises. The furnace now rarely runs. The bedrooms are cool, which is how we like it. We live in South Carolina, so winter nights are cool but not frigid. Our electric bill (furnace is an electric heat exchanger) was less than expected last month. Will continue to evaluate this as the winter progresses. So far, very happy with this purchase.

If you buy a Dimplex product, cross your fingers that nothing breaks because if you have to call their customer service/technical support you are in for wild ride. It will take you about 2 hours on hold to get through to a live rep (who has that luxury??). They'll tell you it's their "busy season" meaning it's wintertime (duh!)

Now, if you're lucky enough to actually get through to a live rep, cross your fingers again that your problem wont require them sending out a rep to fix it, because you will be told to expect a call in one-to-two-days to set up an appointment (they wont give you the number to call yourself, you must wait for the call). But then the call doesn't come and you realize that your only recourse is to call Dimplex. Now your back to going on hold for two hours again.

The good news though is that if your fireplace breaks down in the middle of summer when you don't use it, you'll be able to get right through to one of their reps.

I love my fireplace, it is beautifully made and keeps my living room warm. My heat is in the ceiling so it always seemed cool. Now in the evening I turn the furnace way down and the fireplace keeps the room very comfortable. I highly recommend it. This was my initial review posted on a deal site where i learned about this heater.

Consider this the good.

Been running the Lifesmart Infrared heater for the last 4 days and i think its a keeper.

We lowered our downstairs thermostat to 60 and cranked up the Lifesmart on high. It took several hours before the thermostat was satisfied when set to 68 degrees.

Once it cycled off and on a couple times, i tried raising the thermostat to 72. It never shut off. Looks like 66-68 is going to be the sweet spot if we dont want it running continuously.

I have it in a room that measures 13'x27' with 8' ceilings. We put up sheets to block double wide openings into adjacent rooms.

We put a temp gauge on the shelf and it does read around 68-70 degrees when the unit cycles off.

So is this thing going to heat a 1,000 to 1,500 sq. ft. area? I really doubt it, but it does a decent job of heating the room i purchased it for. It even has an off/on timer which we used both to turn the unit on in the morning an hour before we get up and then we also used it to shut off 2 hours after leaving the house just in case our guest forgets to turn it off.

The fan may be a little noisy for some, but we couldn't hear it with the TV going so its not a big deal.

You can feel the warm air coming out of it from about 4' away, but beyond that its not directly noticeable.

I haven't had the chance to hook up my Kill-A-Watt meter yet, but hope to do so this week.

Remote control works well and all functions are accessible through it.

The power cord does get a little warm to the touch. The manual does say that it must be plugged into an outlet rated at 15 Amps or more and that nothing else be allowed to run on that circuit.

If you do the math, 1500 Watts at 120 volts = 12.5 Amps. So i wont be running the microwave, TV or any other such appliance at the same time. Luckily we have a couple circuits in the living room area, so it hasnt been an issue for us.

So the jury is still out on the added electricity cost, but if the claims of a dollar a day hold true, hopefully itll save us some money on our oil bill. The manual bases that claim on operating it for 8 hours out of the day. Based on our KWH rate of 8.265, our cost to operate comes out to about .99 cents pr/day.

Ill be anxious to hook up the Kill-A-Watt and see what it says and also to have a look at our first electric bill.

The Bad and the Ugly:

Just short of 3 weeks of use, we got 2 E1 errors within 2 days of each other. Had to unplug the unit and plug right back in. We were able to continue using it after.

I knew about these E1 errors after reading some reviews here and was hoping it wouldnt happen to me. I decided to buy it anyways hoping Lifesmart had resolved the issue.

A couple days later the unit started shutting off completely with no error code. After letting it sit for a while, the power light would come back on. If we tried unplugging and replugging right away, it would not come back on and no lights appeared on the unit.

With just 2 days left on the return policy, it got sent back yesterday.

I emailed Lifesmart twice about the issue and after several days wait got a response suggesting it was an overheat issue and that i needed to make sure there was a minimum of 2-3 ft clearance behind the unit, that it wasnt plugged into a circuit with other high draw devices, that it wasnt on a GFCI outlet and that we weren't using an extension cord. None of this applied to us except for the fact that there are 2 lamps on the same circuit. As mentioned before i measured the Lifesmart heater drawing 12.5 Amps at its highest setting, so that leaves a little room for some low current devices like the lamps.

After waiting several more days when i inquired about shipping costs to send it back to them for repair, they said that they would ship me the parts and i could install them myself! I have no problem doing this, but found it highly unusual that they would suggest something like this on a unit thats still under warranty.

I got this email on my way to ship the unit back to the retailer i bought it from.

Last weekend i went out and bought 2 different inexpensive Fan Heaters that both have a 1500 watt setting. Both did about the same as the Lifesmart heater in keeping the room described above at around 66-68 degrees. The one cheaper fan was purchased for $16 and doesnt have the bells and whistles that the Lifesmart has, but it cost a whole lot less. The 2nd one costs $35 and does have a shut off timer feature, but no start up timer (which i miss). Both have the auto shut off tip feature.

Our electric bill did go up some in the 3 weeks we ran the lifesmart and i dont expect that using either of these less expensive heaters will change the electricity usage much. I put my Kill-A-Watt meter on both of the cheaper units and they both draw about the same wattage and current as the lifesmart.

The Lifesmart ran pretty much continuously unless i had it set to 66 degrees. It would then cycle off occasionally. As i have read elsewhere and in some recent deal forum discussions, is that 1500 watts is 1500 watts no matter how you slice it. The lifesmart is no more efficient than either of these 2 fan heaters i bought. The only thing these Amish style Infrared heaters have going for them is looks and the possible inclusion of an timer to turn the unit on at a specified time.

I was interested in these types of heaters but after reading some of the reviews I was unsure. I decided to try it after a friend told me they had one and loved it. I live in NH and bought this to help heat my 500sq ft mobile home....well I am pleased to say that it has been heating my home all by itself, I have it set on low and on 68* and it keeps the whole place at that temp( I also run a fan to circulate the air)....its been in the low 20's and its done great! My propane furnace hasn't run once since I got this heater which is great at 3.40 a gallon for propane! I haven't gotten the 1st electricity bill yet, but I have figured out on low it uses 1000 watts an hour which is 1 kilo watt an hour and at .16 cents a kilo watt/hr thats $3.85 a day if it ran constantly which it does not, it cycles on and off so my bill shouldn't be that bad compared to propane costs....we will see. I recommend this heater to anyone looking to supplement their heating bill...its been doing a great job for me!

The LS1500-6 is bulkier and very noisy compared to the LS1500-4. We have both, and even though the LS1500-6 looks nicer, it's not worth dealing with the extra noise. Also, in terms of heating capability both models seemed about the same to us. The LS1500-6 failed on us after only 2 weeks of use, and vminnovations wanted us to pay forty bucks to ship it back to them for a replacement, plus shipping costs for the new unit ridiculous. We should have dealt directly with amazon since they have a better return policy for dealing with defective merchandise.

Excellent heater, and I would highly recommend to others.

Because the price of propane has gone up exponentially, I decided it was time to do some zone heating. I live in a 2200 sq foot house with myself and my dog... no reason to heat the whole house when we spend 99% of the time in 3 rooms. I turned down the main furnace by about 12 degrees. I bought a couple of other heaters which work well in smaller rooms, but my kitchen/family room area is about 650sq ft, and in order to heat them up, I had to have two space heaters running. This one heats the room up in about an hour (72 degrees) on high, and then will maintain that temp on the low setting.

The one feature I love is the timer. Just before going to bed, I turn the unit off and set the timer to 7 hours. The heater turns on about one hour before I get up and voila, no more freezing in the morning while I wait for the room to warm up.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is that it is noisier than I expected. But I can live it, and just don't put it next to me.

I am glad I got this fireplace, our county had an ice storm, and our power was knocked out. Using this fireplace, and shutting my bedroom doors, I was able to keep the main living area at a steady 66 degrees, while the outside temp was 35. I used 6 cans of gel before our power came back on, about 6 hours later. I do not have a large house, not sure about using this fireplace to heat a larger space.

I may buy another type of gel fireplace for my bedroom

I will say that the mounting screws and wall plugs that came with the fireplace tend to pull out of the wall, I bought some different ones, after having to fix the wall.

I bought my wall mount fireplace over 2 years ago and simply love it! Living in MN, there's a perpetual chill in the air for several months, but this is a wonderful solution! It puts out heat and keeps my living space cozy and snuggly.

It fits my decor and is made well. I hung it myself, using two "Hercules" hooks, so didn't need to find studs.

I recommend it to everyone, but should also disclose that the gel fuel is pricy. I'd use my fireplace more, if the fuel was available at local stores, instead of having to order it online and pay the high ship costs.

During the summer months, it doubles as a triple candle holder and still looks great.

After moving into a condo, a friend mentioned that she really missed her fireplace.

After a little research on Amazon, I found this SEI Black Archtop, and she loved the look.

It was very easily mounted directly under her 40 in. LCD TV in a small den (about 10 x 12).

I used three "as seen on TV" Hercules hooks instead of the provided hardware, and it mounted without issue. I'm sure I could have used only two of these Hercules hooks and still had a secure mount. Except for the rounded bottom that protrudes about 7 inches from the wall, the rest of the fireplace only protrudes about three inches.

Be sure to measure and mark carefully.

I was a little concerned about the heat that would be generated directly under the TV set, and while it does indeed get very warm, she has watched three-hour-long movies without issue. We left about 18 inches of space between the top of the fireplace and the bottom of the TV. Note that you can still place your hand on top of the fireplace when it is hot, and that the space behind the TV (from the wall mount) seems to help dissipate heat from the set itself.

We used the Real Flame brand gel, and she tells me that her first three cans lasted almost 4 hours. I will say that the heat generated in the small room was a bit much for me (definitely had to open the windows), but she likes things toasty so it is perfect for her. If too warm, I suppose you could use one can instead of all three, but that would not be as aesthetically pleasing. The flames are reasonably realistic (very similar to a gas fireplace), as is the crackling sound (which is of course more a function of the gel than the fireplace). When not in use, she places three candles on the snuffer, and it looks nice.

Overall, she is overjoyed with the fireplace. We may even purchase one for our own place :)

I received this as a gift. I love real fireplaces but our house doesn't have one. This unit looks nice the wall and scratches my fireplace itch complete with giving off a little cozy heat. Unit is black with a copper color trimmay or may not fit your decor. The canisters do leave a some ash that needs to be wiped from the unit. Clean freaks might think its too messy. It will use up canisters if used often. If I remember correctly; I got about 2-3 uses per canister, burning 3 hours or so. Gives off alot of light. Unit is well constructed and looks better than the picture.

Looked great in the photos but the weak point is the 32mm chipboard it makes for a package that is to big and heavy to be handled by UPS a fact candidly acknowledged by my local delivery guy. As a result, I gave up after two attempts. On both occasions heavy drops had smashed the corners, as well as shaving parts of the cosmetic white laminate off. Unusable. Amazon return process was easy, but in all very disappointing as I still have a floor mounted TV. Ah well, Ikea beckons....

I ordered a white unit and received a black one. Initial order was received in three days but replacement took over a week. We are still putting it together and it is both well designed and material is good looking. Care has been given in designing the unit for strength. I think we will be very pleased with it takes a while to put together but instructions are pretty good.

Logset was easy to assemble and install. Follow the directions, they're pretty good. If you get the remote-again follow directions because the wire colors don't match up. Otherwise a great and realistic unit that keeps all the heat it generates in the house.
