The pluses: The fire pit is beautiful, well made and sturdy. It comes fully assembled and packed in over one hundred pounds of protective shipping material. Its shipping weight was 410 lbs. but free to Amazon Prime members. The delivery was not by UPS, but a special carrier whose delivery truck unloaded the crate with a forklift. There could not be any careless employees throwing THIS package around and damaging it. It came in a sturdy, new wooden crate that was not nailed together. It was held firmly in place with strong metal clamps that were easily removed with a crowbar. The science of hot air ballons speaks well for this fire pit's low profile. Because hot air goes up, the low fire pit table spreads more heat to people sitting around it--before the heated air can escape above them.

The minuses: A propane tank cannot be put inside this fire pit. I am 67 years old and do not have a home shop or handyman experience. I will have to look around for matching enclosed bamboo end tables with a door large enough to put a propane tank inside. I will then have to hire someone to cut out part of the backside of one of those tables to put in a vent-grille---per manufacturer's safety warnings. This is doable but an inconvenient cost--unless you want to have an ugly butane tank sitting in the open air next to the fire pit table. The table is one piece and cannot be disassembled. To hook up the equipment inside the fire pit table, it must be stood up on its side--held in place by two people while a third person installs the hardware. Obviously you don't want to put the tile in direct contact with a concrete floor with the 300 lbs. of weight pressing down. I will put several blankets on the floor to cushion it before tipping it on its side for installation.

The firepit took a little while to arrive (sorry...Amazon Prime did not help), and an excellent price thru Amazon. This thing came by a real freight truck, as this sucker is palletized and boxed. So huge, I couldn't even get the pallet through our gate. You need tools to break this baby out and my wife and I had to move it vertically on a furniture dolly to get it in the backyard. Not a lightweight piece, but not unmanageable once in place. I can easily tilt it up on one edge by myself. But I won't move it by myself. Packaged extremely well.

I noticed that that Cal-Flame doesn't tell you much about this firepit on their site or on Amazon, so I'll try to fill-in the blanks:

It seems well built steel tube frame with wonderboard, then with stucco-type finish and tile on top. This thing might last a while.

Cal-Flame includes extra finishing stuff (stucco, tile, grout, etc..) just in case you have an incident. A brilliant idea if you have an issue down the road and can't find matching tile.

The instructions suck. Well, there isn't much to know hook up gas and light it. However, there is an air-bleed adjustment that they gloss over and it seems kind of important to me for an authentic flame I have no idea where to set it, and it's not like you can mess with it while the fire is running, as you have to get under the firepit to adjust it. I don't think its even meant to adjust, but since the crappy manual shows a different pipe than was on my firepit, who knows. I played with it a few times for a yellowish flame (as opposed to a natural gas "blue" flame), and it looks okay.

It comes ready to go for propane, and includes a natural gas conversion orifice. (well, its supposed to...mine didn't come with it like it was supposed to, and since the instructions suck and were vague, it meant a call to Cal-Flame to figure out what I had and what I needed. Try explaining the size of a small unlabeled orifice to the tech guy who thinks you should have two very similar unlabeled (??) orifices with similar sized holes. Regardless, we figured it out and they sent me the missing natural gas one immediately.)

The control valve is a mystery, as it comes with a note saying not to use it in a certain position weird. I'm not sure where to put it to light it, so it takes me a few (10-20?) seconds to light it. I haven't mastered it yet, and since the manual sucks, I'm not sure of the exact problem. I'm getting better at it. Seems like it should be much easier, but maybe I am bleeding my natural gas line of air since I have a shut-off valve upstream to the firepit. Anyway, it eventually lights with the push of a button.

You will need a natural gas pipe to hook it up to your natural gas source. Despite the amount of BTU's Cal-Flame claims the firepit puts out versus the labels on the natural gas pipes sold at Home Depot, I believed it needed the "bigger" (medium) size, but since the fitting on my house was the medium size and the fire pit was the smaller size (I cannot remember exactly which size), I was trying to get a larger pipe all the way to the firepit for the best gas volume. I couldn't find the right adapters to make that work. Best bet is to hit the Home Depot or Lowes and buy a bunch of stuff, so you don't have to go twice getting the right adapters, flares, etc. Its easy, but I spent 20 minutes looking at the hoses at the store, thinking I needed the bigger one (based on BTU's) when I actually needed the smallest one, as the hoses inside the fire pit are quite small also. Some clarification in the manual regarding hose size and gas volume issues (if any) would be nice.

It comes with the hose for the propane tank (which I have not used.)

It comes with lava rocks and four fake "logs" nice. I'm thinking of going to glass stones in the firepit!

Contrary to what I thought, this thing does not make much heat for warmth. Its pretty much for ambiance only. After an hour of running. I can pick up the (cold side) of one of the "logs" without burning my hand. Sure, the "logs" get warm and lava rocks get warm, but unless your feet are up on the tile table, you are not going to feel the heat. I ended up buying two heat lamps to sit under for warmth. The ambiance and calming effect of the fire ARE nice though. I bet I could make more heat by burning the crappy manual. But I digress.

It does not come with a cover. I found a generic square one on the internet (not that easy due to the size), but it works great to keep the rain out.

Yes, you can make smores with this thing. Fun!

The looks on this thing do not disappoint as it looks beautiful.

Strong and sturdy. I haven't tried it, but I bet it's sturdy enough to stand on. Dance on? Not sure...

All in all, I don't regret the purchase. It looks great and works as designed (I think). I am disappointed with the heat output, as I thought it would be closer to a campfire type heat. Not so. However, we've already used it 3-4 times in the past few weeks (since it can't be too cold outside, otherwise you'll freeze). Great value on Amazon. 4/5 stars.

There is no easier, more hassle-free way to start a charcoal fire than by using one of these. As long as you have access to an electric outlet somewhere in the vicinity of your grill, you'd be foolish to use any other method.

You place the heating element on the grate, with the plastic handle resting on the barbecue's edge. Cover the element with your briquettes, plug it in, wait 12 minutes, and then remove it. By that time, any charcoals that were in contact with the red-hot element will have started. Mound up the coals, wait a few more minutes, and you're good to go. No smelly, dangerous lighter fluids, no chimneys, no newspapers. What could be more simple?

The electric cord is quite short, so if your outlet isn't close by you'll have to use an extension cord. Just make sure it is a heavy duty one like the kind used for power tools.

It's quite durable if used correctly. I bought the one I have now 6 or 7 years ago and I use it at least 30 or so times a year. The heating element is beginning to crack now, so it will fail soon, but 200+ uses for this inexpensive item is pretty respectable, I think.

I can't understand why everyone doesn't use one of these. If you like to barbecue in your backyard or on your patio or deck, this is indispensable equipment.

This starter is wonderful. But don't get lazy and leave it under the charcoal, like I did. You need to remove it after the fire starts. The plastic near the cord melts and the thing is ruined. I am ordering another one because I find I don't want to start charcoal without one.

I have a Big Green Egg. And these are recommended to start the charcoal in them.

It does the job, flat out. I have only had it a few weeks, but it does indeed start the charcoal.

Quickly too! About 5-10 mins get the coals read hot!

I gave it 5 stars because this thing does exactly what it's supposed to do, start coal.

Now, for my commentary.

This thing makes me NERVOUS AS HELL.

I have kids, and they are goofy. This is basically every toaster/counter-top oven heating element in the world, with a plastic handle. Haha

So when you take this thing out of the coals, it is this red hot heating element. Where do you put it? It has to cool off for a few mins. On the table? Patio? Where out of the way, that someone isnt going to touch it?

I am not knocking the product, it is what it is, but think about this stuff before you buy it. I wouldnt want to see someone get hurt from this thing.

Honest reviews on Char-Broil SureFire Electric Charcoal Starter

this is the best charcoal starter we have ever used. the last one purchased is still working but is over ten years old and is used regularly every summer. I just purchased a new one as a back-up, but may not need it for a long time. Very reliable and very easy and safe to use.

In my area this is alot of wind(since i live close to the windy city chi) so everytime i get some kind of fire going the charcoal wont light. I tried the charcoal chimney and paid 15 bucks for it and it did nothing for me. So after trying for 2 hours to light using that dumb chimney I borrowed one of these wands from my mother and in 5 minutes the charcoal started smoking. This the best starter for a barbeque hands down.

Replacement grates for the BIS 2 (by security chimney) are no longer to be found on their website. I have replaced mine twice in the last 23 years. The purchase price through a warehouse has now risen to >$150. Buy one of these! Then get out your hacksaw. Cut the first bar on each end off.....make the cut even with the second bar on the back side. Also cut the center support even with the second bar. Leave the front full width (creating tabs on the front, that stick out to the left and right) by making the final cut to remove the end bars from the side, just behind the front cross bar. You will find that a little final grinding, or filing, of these two tabs will allow this grate to fit snugly into the ash pan of your BIS. I bought two; one for now and one for 7-8 years in the future when this grate "burns out." Be aware that the measurements listed for the G42 on many websites are simply incorrect. I called customer service a US Stove and got a lady with a wonderful Tennessee accent, who very kindly verified the true dimensions of this grate. This is a must if you are trying to use it for an application like mine. Good luck with your project.

The tools are fine but the screen has some issues. It looks beautiful, but it leans forward so we have to put something under the legs to make it flush with the opening. Also, the doors are held closed by a magnet. The magnet quit working after a few days of use. The doors close but there is nothing securing them now that the magnet failed. Very disappointed in this purchase.

I have been using this for 2 seasons now to haul ash from my wood stove. I fill it up with hot coals/ash, then leave it sitting on the floor of my garage to cool off for a day before throwing in my ash can. I was concerned the heat may damage it but it's holding up well.

I know it's for coal, but we needed something to hold hot ash/coals from our stove. There's no easy way to dump the ashpan from our stove, but this suits our needs for now -no worries about a few hot coals from the pan burning or melting this "bucket!"

Ok if you've found this product you know exactly what you're looking for and this will likely fit the bill.

A neighboring farmer had many of these when I was a kid in the late 1970s.

At one time, they were in every flea market I visited.

But like so many treasures of my youth the heavy galvanized pails with the unique shape had disappeared while I was busy in suburbia.

After years of complaints from my wife about using "ugly" Spackle pails (white plastic 5 gallon pails) I recalled the Hod and found it quickly on Amazon.

This one is thinner than the Hods of my youth but it's perfect and works as intended (no moving parts so it isn't really that difficult to meet my expectations on this item.)

More importantly we have returned to marital bliss as the "ugly" Spackle pails remain in the garage while the new Hod has the spotlight on the fireplace hearth.

It's also great for ashes and starter twigs.

If you need something like this just order it... you won't be upset.

Honest reviews on Behrens 617P Painted Coal Hod

Was expecting something a little more 'old school' from when I was a kid and everyone had a wood burning stove of some kind. The one I received wasn't like that at all. Its made of flimsy metal and was packaged so poorly it was distorted from shipping. I bent it back into shape I am still disappointed with the product. In the end, it does its job...

First I'll start with how the product arrived from Amazon. When the UPS guy took it off the truck the box was falling apart and the end was ready to split wide open. It made it about 20ft. to my back porch where the end did split open. I guess you could say it made it to where it had to but this thing is heavy and should be in heavier corrugate for the outer pack box.

All parts are porcelain coated or ceramic and are made from heavy gauge steel. Nothing flexes or bends when you pick it up by an edge. Very nice.

Assembly is very easy and can be done with a Phillips head and a 7/16" wrench / socket combination. The bottom is raised which is very nice as it places the fire and the heat off the ground or surface you are placing it on.

Once assembled it is very heavy and awkward to move by yourself so have it in place first or have a helper or two, as I said it's heavy gauge steel coated with porcelain.

Once I had it in place we began using it that night. The one thing that became a bit of a problem was that even though it's larger than most and can accommodate larger pieces of wood.... when you put a piece in, even if it just bumps the side slightly the sides pop open. There is nothing holding the sides on other than 2 slots in the bottom, the top is free to fall outward whenever, it's just the slight angle that holds them there. Would have been nice to see a small latch, magnet or something. What I ended up doing was putting a piece of wire on the sides I don't open often and leaving one side open for loading. That way I can just unhook the wire end and open up for cleaning.

I have had several large fires in this that lasted hours through the night and had the bottom glowing a nice orange. It holds up well without warping at all. Again, very nice.

After I had a fire going for about 3 hours I placed my hand near, then on the bottom metal. Barely warm. This would be very nice if you were placing on a patio or deck as I have not experienced it getting hot at all on the bottom.

The other nice thing is that all sides are removable for loading, toasting marshmallows or cleaning.

Overall I give this 4 stars ONLY because the sides have no latch to keep them from popping open. Be careful when having people sitting around it if this happens as something could spill out. Add a piece of wire or your own latch and it's perfect!

The frame and base of unit is solid and well built. It looks like a Japanese building and looks cool on my cement patio

near a pool. I enjoyed it for five months and yes the screens hold on with only gravity and I live in a non-windy area.

The quality of the screen material is the problem. It is thin gauge screen mess and then painted. After a few

strong fires it will start to rust. Forget the wire brush. The screen material becomes completely brittle in five

months and vaporized into rust dust. All four go pretty much at the same time. Replacement screens are $29.99 and

all you get from their customer service is "I understand" over and over after they only offer to sell you replacements

that will last the same amount of time. No deals, no discounts, no advice on how to keep them lasting longer. So

you got this great solid frame that will likely last years but after shipping, the four replacement screens will cost the

same as buying a complete new unit here at Amazon. Does that make sense? Char-Broil is not a good company.

Best Deals for Char-Broil Trentino Deluxe Outdoor Fireplace

I've owned two of these. First one lasted about 11 years. It's a great patio fireplace and holds up well. It's the right height and perfect for watching the fire on a cool evening lor letting the kids roast marsh mellows. I would recommend getting the "Deluxe" as it's a bit longer and thus is a better fit for the average size piece of firewood.

If it has any flaw, its the door screens. They rust and can't be replaced. New doors cost as much as the whole unit.

Honest reviews on Char-Broil Trentino Deluxe Outdoor Fireplace

I purchased this fireplace after reading the reviews on other fireplaces. This made the top of my list because of the porcelain finish. It is very durable and will hold up to the weather. The side screens that others are noting as rusting, that is going to happen once any kind of paint is burned off. And you cannot put the porcelain coating on a screen because of the process required. The other reviewers comments about the poor packaging, no kidding! It is terrible! If you purchase one make sure that the package is intact before the carrier leaves so the fasteners are inside so you can assemble the fireplace. I added the picture to show how it looks with wood burning inside the unit.

Chimney 14850 HomeSaver Pro Chimney Cap For Round Clay Flue Tiles - 10 Inches

I was pleasantly surprised at how sturdy this chimney cap is when I took it out of the box. It is much nicer than the deteriorated 15 year old one that it has replaced, and it installed in a few minutes with one screwdriver. We have had some very strong winds and heavy rain in the midwest this spring and it has not budged since I put it on. The house has two other chimneys and when those caps need replacing I will stick with this brand.

I've had problems finding a chimney cap for round clay flue tiles. They are difficult to find at the home improvement stores. So I was delighted to find caps on Amazon. It is well constructed and fits perfectly. FYI there is room for adjustment so it should work for slightly larger tiles. In summary, I don't know if I could find a better chimney cap.

Best Deals for Chimney 14850 HomeSaver Pro Chimney Cap For Round Clay Flue Tiles

At some point after our home was built 40 years ago, the previous owner had new flues installed (3 of them) in the very large field stone chimney that is in the center of the house. Unfortunately when the flue for the wood-burning stove was installed it was placed flush with the chimney crown, placing it at the same level as the two fire place flue "openings." The entire chimney was then covered with a large chimney cap with side mesh. Since we use the wood-burning stove to supplement our heating system during some very cold northeast winters, cresote buildup was always an issue even though we use Anti-Creosote religiously. My husband redid the crown and replaced the large chimney cap with a smaller one that fit over just the two fireplce flues, raised the "problem" flue with a clay chimney pipe and placed the adjustable Chimney 14850 Homesaver Pro Chimey Cap on it. Although the entire project took him several days, putting the Pro Chimney Cap on took less than 30 minutes! Although we haven't used the stove yet we are confident our creosote problems (and safety problems) are over. He did a lot of research into what type of cap would work best for us and was within our budget. Both of us are pleased we chose this one.
