The high cost of flameless candles has kept me from purchasing them so when I saw these I was thrilled at the value. The remote control feature is what sold me on these candles since even the pricier candles sold at retail don't generally come with a remote. The remote control works when you switch the candles to the on position and it easily turns them all on and off. What they don't tell you is that when the candles are off, but the switch stays in the on position, the battery is still being drained. Therefore, the batteries in all 6 of my candles are now dead after only 3 weeks on my wall. So although the remote is a novel idea, having to manually switch the candles on and off before and after using the remote defeats the purpose all together. The brightness is only fair on these candles but they do look fairly realistic when on and off.

I thought I'd offer a general guide to flameless candles, since I have a vast number of these and have tried all kinds. First: It can be hard to shop for these online, because there may be a greater difference between the appearance of the candle and the appearance on your screen than is the case with most products. So, first of all, I'd recommend buying flameless candles locally, where you can look closely at them. You can find them in gift shops, hobby and craft stores, card shops, drugstores and dollar stores.
Second, avoid those with lithium batteries. Those little disk batteries are expensive, and before you know it you'll have spent $100.00 on your $6.99 candle. They're also prone to turn on and off unpredictably due to the batteries not fitting into the slot as accurately as other batteries. They have to sit in there perfectly, which means the place where you insert them has to be perfectly configured to receive the battery. These aren't expensive items, so you'll find they rarely fit in as snugly as they should or else are too snug and won't turn off. Other types of batteries are held in place by little springs and are much more likely to stay put and work without fiddling on your part. If you plan to use flameless candles throughout the house, as I do, it will be well worth your while to buy rechargeable batteries and a charger. This will cost you a little more as an initial output, but a good rechargeable battery, such as eneloop, will keep your flameless candles flickering almost indefinitely. Some now come with remote controls or timers built in, where the candle, when set appropriately, will burn for six hours and then turn itself off saving the battery for when you really want it.
Third, if you want your candle to look real, choose one with a little bit of wax drip on the sides. Without that, your candle will still be pretty but much less candle-like. Also, a drip on the sides makes the flickering light inside appear more random. A consistent looking light, even when flickering, is less like the random flickering of a candle's flame and looks noticeably less real.
Fourth, take note of where the "flame" is located. You shouldn't be able to see it sticking up over the top of the candle because, if you can, it can plainly be seen for what it is a plastic "flame", not a real one. Some candles exhibit the opposite mistake the "flame" is too far down inside the candle. Remember, a real candle illuminates a little of the area around it. A flameless candle with the light source too far down will only illuminate the inside of the candle but not the area above it at all. This dilutes the candle's effect and gives it away as a fake candle. Ideally, from a a few feet away and in a room that isn't bright, the best flameless candles will be indistinguishable from the real thing. To achieve this effect, it's critical that the source of light not be too far down inside the candle. In part for this reason, the most convincing and real looking flameless candles tend to be no taller than 5 to 6 inches, with the "flame" close enough to the top to illuminate an area above the candle but not so close that the "flame" itself can be seen. Taller candles almost invariably have the "flame" much farther down inside the candle, providing less light and a less convincing candle effect.
Fifth, with a little imagination these candles can be more useful than you'd think. For instance, I live in an old house where the upstairs and downstairs halls have no overhead light or electrical outlets. I use three of these candles in each hall at night and they provide more than enough light to avoid bumbling into the furniture in the dark, as well as creating an effect of cozy prettiness. Overnight guests in my house almost invariably tell me that they're going to recreate this inviting effect in their own hallways instead of the night light or overhead light they used before. Carefully placed, these will adequately light your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night but without the shock of bright light.
Last, be a careful shopper and, as already mentioned, try your local stores first. If the price is more than $15.00, the law of diminishing returns begins to operate. You can get the best quality flameless candles for this price, and paying more will not get you a better quality light. The two prettiest and most convincing flameless candles I have came from a post-Christmas sale at a local drugstore. Six years later they're still working perfectly and appear exactly the same as the day I bought them. Expensive is rarely better when it comes to flameless candles.

I absolutely LOVE these! I was looking for a couple of "smaller" type candles that would fit in the sconces on my wall that I can't reach without a chair. I wanted something that I would not have to touch to turn on and off.
When I began the search I was suprised to find that the smaller candles that would fit in my scones did not have a "timer" option to turn on the same time every day and then automatically turn off after 4, 6 to 8 hours.
I was so happy when I found these but leary of the remote control. When I received them I was so happy with the setup! I like them better than the auto timer. They look really nice and I can easily turn them on and off with the remote whenever I want.
The batteries last a really long time too. Well worth the price.

These candles are a good idea, and they are beautiful "off". However, when they are turned on they do not resemble a real flame and seem very orangy and fake. Also, other remotes besides the remote it comes with (ie TV remotes, etc) seem to power them on and off not a happy feature.

I thought these candles would be great in a fireplace display. Even though they were not "on" for more than 30 minutes, I found the remote would not work a week later.
